A core value of the Web?

Talking with Scoble a few days ago, we agreed that one of the most irritating things about running a weblog is when people ask for a link in a way that makes it seem like they are entitled to the link.

I've heard this from other bloggers too. It's even worse when I would have pointed without being prompted, because now I feel I can't point without seeming to have followed the instructions of the person requesting the link.

Why do we feel this way? Speaking for myself only, it's because I think my readers value my independence, and I certainly value my independence. If I were to become a mouthpiece for someone else, I wouldn't do it, I'd quit.

The person requesting the link, if I give them what they ask for, might tell others that he or she can get a link on Scripting News. I would rather have them say that Dave said no and told me not to ask again. I don't even mind if they say I was rude about it. Anything to help get the word out that I point to what I want to point to, and no one can tell me what goes on Scripting News. That's my weblog. I decide what goes there, and only I decide.

I post this here as a possible topic for discussion at the Core Values discussion, led by Mary Hodder.
